Step Into The Portal NorthPark Center

NorthPark Center, known for its renowned 20th and 21st-century art collection, is adding a unique temporary installation to its art-filled corridors. People all around the world sign in daily to the social media giant to have meaningful conversations about what’s happening in their lives, and in their world. And now, the global conversation is live in Dallas.

NorthPark is the latest location to host a Portal by Shared_Studios, an immersive audiovisual space that opens a window to a network of sites around the world. The Portal will be on view at NorthPark through Sept. 25 in Macy’s Court.

Through August 5, these portals will bring an interactive Twitter experience to Dallas, connecting users through experiential video interactions. On July 31, a “celebrating women around the world” event will envoke a conversation about how far we’ve come and the work remaining to build a truly #SharedWorld.

The 40 global #Tweetup spaces – public installations, made from industrial shipping containers – will be open from Berlin to Brooklyn, Doha to Dallas, and Lagos to Los Angeles.

“These Tweetups will demonstrate the power of conversation through live, experiential video interactions,” per an official release.

Portals are physical structures that bring people together who would never otherwise meet. When you enter a Portal, you come face-to-face with someone somewhere else on earth, live and full-body—as if in the same room. In this case, the portals include a Twitter experience via video.

From 11 a.m. to  8 p.m. daily, the activation will take place in 40 global cities around the world, including Dallas. These spaces, called #Tweetups, will be free, open to the public, and rooted in Twitter’s mission to break down global barriers and connect cultures, ethnicities, and humanity through immersive conversations.

The Dallas “activation site” is at NorthPark Center, on Level 1 near Macy’s.

Portals connect people separated by distance and difference for conversation, education, collaboration, and play. The NorthPark Portal will connect to the entire Portals network, including sites in Afghanistan, Honduras, Iraq, Jordan, Germany, Rwanda, and Mexico. Portals are what happens when we are intentional about building a social network. They embody the mission of Shared_Studios: to give people everywhere a chance to tell their own story, to explore the diversity of human experience, to connect people separated by distance and difference in encounters that are humanizing and real.

The Portal is a resource through which Dallas can access the richness of human diversity.

Live interpretation is available, and the experience is free and open to the public.

Every Portal is staffed by a real human being — someone who facilitates dialogue, provides live language interpretation and connects their community to the world.
