W.T. White didn’t break its lengthy losing streak on Thursday night, but perhaps the Longhorns are getting closer.

South Garland used a second-half surge to win 48-27 at a soggy Loos Stadium, handing WTW its 12th consecutive defeat spanning two seasons.

Defense remains an issue for the Longhorns, who played their second game for new head coach Tony Johnson. WTW has allowed more than 40 points in each of those 12 losses.

The Colonels (1-1) rolled up more than 600 rushing yards — for an average of almost 13 yards per carry — including 302 yards and four touchdowns from dual-threat quarterback Jaquarion Turner. It was South Garland’s first win since last year’s matchup with WTW.

The Longhorns (0-2) remained competitive for much of the night. They opened the scoring with a 22-yard touchdown pass from Ethan Thompson to Adolfo Cazares.

In the second quarter, Chance Carey’s 41-yard scoring run tied the game at 13. The diminutive Carey finished with a team-high 129 yards and three touchdowns.

WTW’s offensive balance included 235 passing yards from Thompson. His top target was Jalen Hicks with eight receptions for 118 yards.

Overall, the Longhorns showed improvement following a 51-13 loss to Greenville a week ago. WTW will face Carter next week at Kincaide Stadium before hosting Richardson on Sept. 28 in the District 8-6A opener.
