Dallas Spring Party guest speaker Alex Beard opened the floor for questions probably wasn’t expecting a question about the five African elephants who arrived at the Dallas Zoo in March.

The painter, best known for his wildlife compositions in his “abstract naturalism” style, responded by saying he wasn’t well enough formed to offer an opinion.

Hosted at the Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Garden, the Dallas Spring Party on April 15 featured one of Beard’s paintings Moonrise Over the Roosting Tree, which went for $12,000 in a silent auction. The money raised from the event and the auction will benefit the Texas Nature Conservancy.

Guests were decked out in nature-themed apparel, including philanthropist Lyda Hill’s sneakers, which had images of cheetahs imprinted on them, and Beard’s needle-point vest with various animals on it, which was made by his grandmother.

The Texas Nature Conservancy works to keep the state of Texas beautiful by preserving various ecoregions, such as freshwater, deserts, grasslands, forests, and marine life.
