Supporters Are Sweet for Camp Sweeney

Supporters of Camp Sweeney, which serves children with Type 1 diabetes, gathered at de Boulle Diamond and Jewelry on Feb. 18 for the fifth annual Sweethearts for Sweeney gala.

The event helped raise $210,000 to fund scholarships for those who can’t afford camp. The non-profit Camp Sweeney is owned and operated by Southwestern Diabetic Foundation.

“Camp Sweeney provides financial assistance to any camper who cannot pay, but sometimes even this is not enough for children to attend camp,” said camp director Dr. Fernandez. “The Sweethearts for Sweeney event at de Boulle allows us to bridge the gap for our families in greatest need.”

Amanda and Brint Ryan with Kim and David Roosevelt chaired the gala with the help of honorary chairs Doug and Holly Deason and Shelle Sills, and past chairs Karen and Mark Carney, and Connie and Marc Sigel. The event was catered by Harwood’s Marie Gabrielle and Pogo’s Wine.

After the economic recession in 2009, Denis and Karen Boulle teamed up with David Genever-Watling to help rejuvenate the camp’s scholarship fund with the first Sweethearts gala.
