SMU to Break Ground on Aquatics Center

Future Olympic swimmer hopefuls take note: SMU is breaking ground on its new Aquatics Center at 5550 SMU Blvd. this Friday, Feb. 26.

The new 42,000-square-foot facility will feature an Olympic-sized, eight-lane pool with diving platform and 800 seats for spectators. According to SMU spokeswoman Nancy George, it should open in the spring or early summer of 2017, just in time for youth swim lessons so start back up.

Guests at the groundbreaking will include former SMU swimmers and Olympic gold medalists Ryan Berube and Steve Lundquist, former coach George McMillion, and more than 100 former and current SMU swimmers and divers.

SMU has produced 12 Olympic medalists and made 91 NCAA National Championship appearances.
