Local Veteran Honored For Service
World War II and Korean War veteran Dr. Robert D. Londeree, a retired dentist and current resident of Edgemere, visited the national war memorials in D.C. for the first time thanks to a local organization.
Honor Flight DFW provided 91 year old Londeree and 40 other selected veterans the opportunity to take an all-expense-paid excursion to see the memorials Sept. 18 and 19. The organization, run by volunteers and funded by donors, organizes several trips a year as a tribute to the service and sacrifices veterans made during their military careers.
“This is a dream come true, and I am so grateful to Honor Flight DFW,” Londeree said.
During this trip, Londeree had the opportunity to reflect on the many lives he impacted during his time overseas, said his son-in-law Tom Shehan. He recalled the veterans –most in their 90s–had the most energy he had ever seen.
The honored veterans came back to a welcome home reception on Sept. 19.
Londeree, who was one of the first oral and maxillofacial surgeons in Dallas, received his dental training in the U.S. Army during World War II. After being discharged he came home to establish his own dental practice. He sold it when he was activated for the Korean War.
“We are honored that [Londeree] has been selected to participate in Honor Flight DFW,” said John Falldine, the managing director of Edgemere said. “Each one of these vets has a story that deserves recognition.”
