Highland Park faces an intriguing matchup as it opens District 10-6A play tonight against North Mesquite on homecoming at Highlander Stadium.

The Scots are looking to start a new home winning streak after falling to Pulaski Academy three weeks ago, which snapped a string of 84 straight victories on their home field.

Both teams are coming off wins in their final nondistrict contests prior to a bye week. For HP, that was a 35-28 victory over Prosper on Sept. 12 at AT&T Stadium.

The Scots (2-1) hope the midseason break allowed them to heal up some minor injuries and refine their offense and defense, both of which have looked great at times but struggled with consistency.

Henry Allen has looked sharp at quarterback, completing 68 percent of his passes for 821 yards and six touchdowns. Cy McCullough (17 catches) and Chris Buell (15 catches) have become his favorite targets, while Stephen Dieb has powered the running game with five touchdowns (including one receiving).

North Mesquite is the first Class 6A opponent on HP’s schedule. And it’s a game between likely playoff contenders, as the Stallions (3-0) are the only team in 10-6A without a loss thus far. They’ve won those three contests (against Garland Naaman Forest, Arlington Sam Houston, and South Garland) by an average margin of 48-7, and two of them have been on the road.

The Stallions boast one of the top rushing attacks in the Dallas area, led by dual-threat quarterback Ja’Quez Gooch, Dreshawn Minnieweather, and Dominique McBride. They certainly look capable of snapping a seven-year streak without a postseason appearance.

The playoffs are still eight weeks away, but North Mesquite and HP could make an early statement in the district standings tonight.
