Lamplighter School third-grader Gracie Hood received the Joe M. and Doris Russell Dealey Fund Junior Award of Achievement for her original poetry. Hood read her poem Our Smelly Dogs to a crowd at the J. Erik Jonsson Central Library on April 25 as part of the 19th Annual Express Yourself! Youth Poetry Competition.

Hood’s poem was also selected to be read by a professional actor at the Children’s Chorus of Greater Dallas’ The Poet Sings concert on April 26. “I liked it when everyone laughed at the funny parts of my poem!” she said.

She received six other awards from the Poetry Society of Texas and was honored on April 18 at the Dallas Public Library’s downtown auditorium.
