Girl Scout Participates in Service Challenge

Highland Park High School student Claire Crofford recently returned from Outward Bound Costa Rica’s Service Challenge Destination. Crofford was one of 23 Girl Scouts nationwide who were selected to participate, and was one of only five to receive the Elliot Wildlife Values Project Scholarship for the trip.

The Girl Scouts dug trenches at the local rainforest reserve, painted an elementary school in an indigenous village, and contrasted remote tree limbs. Amid their laborious projects they were able to learn about the wildlife, culture, and geography of Costa Rica as well as practice their Spanish.
At the end of the project, they spent a day adventuring, white water rafting, and taking a canopy tour of the jungle — gaining a new perspective on the place where they worked the last few weeks.

“I feel like I have gained friends and a unique cultural experience,” Crofford said.
