Park Cities YMCA Loses ‘Beloved’ Referee

We’ve received word that Roy Gaskill, a beloved referee at the Park Cities YMCA, died this week after a battle with cancer. I don’t know that I’ve ever heard a referee described as “beloved,” as associate sports director Mona Callaghan did in an email to coaches, but a reader who alerted me to this news backs up that description. “He was always friendly, fun, fair, and kind,” the reader told me. A memorial service is scheduled for 10 a.m. on Friday at Fellowship Bible Church.

Oh no! He was a sweetheart. Condolences to his friends, family, coworkers and little athletes who knew him.

Actually, there are several beloved referee’s, who do a fantastic job of working with the kids, encouraging them during the games, explaining things to them, especially with the younger kids.
Now “beloved spectator” in the Park Cities? That is indeed rare…
