Who Needs Big Dance? SMU Better Off in NIT

Everyone at SMU was disappointed when the Mustangs were snubbed by the NCAA Tournament. But I’m hear to tell you they’re better off in the NIT. For one thing, the university got the revenue of three extra home games, including last night’s dramatic victory over Cal. Those national TV broadcasts from a packed Moody Coliseum will certainly help boost recruiting and applications more than tournament games in a far-flung locale such as Albany or Spokane would have. And now the Mustangs get the prestige of playing in the NIT’s final four in Madison Square Garden, which may help SMU recruit athletes from Larry Brown’s hometown, New York City. Win win.
