Video Scoreboard Proposed For Highlander
Highland Park ISD wants to add a taller scoreboard with video capability to Highlander Stadium.
The existing scoreboard is 36 feet wide and 19 feet, 3.75 inches tall. The new scoreboard would also be 36 feet wide but would be 25 feet tall.
The proposal is subject to the University Park City Council’s approval. The council on Tuesday will consider an ordinance that would establish a special sign district at the school.
The ordinance would also allow the school district to add six advertisements to the 34 that already line the fence around the field. The ads could be no larger than 12 feet, 2 inches wide by 9 feet, 2 inches tall, and they would all have to face the field.
This all comes as a surprise to me, as HPISD trustees have seemed in favor lately of tearing down Highlander Stadium, expanding the high school, and rebuilding the stadium outside the district. But I guess all options are still on the table.
None of the public documents on the University Park website mentions how much this new scoreboard will cost.
Still think that them moving the stadium is not going to happen, or at least not for a good number of years. Either way, it was/is an interesting topic of conversation to compare Highlander Stadium and it’s amenitities to that of the competition especially including those on the receiving end of Robin Hood dollars.
Frankly, I’d rather see better bathroom in the stadium ( the are gross) and a better sound system for halftime. One that actually has stereo sound. This appears to be an act of hubris by some one who wants to see their kid on replay//highlite reel. Who is financing?
I’m sure residents in the surrounding neighborhood will love the new jumbotron. Those big advertisements will look great and maybe we can raise enough money to start paying our players.
If you ever go to the away games, the replay screens are great … especially if you are there to really watch football! And, no I do not have a son at the high school I want to watch. I saw a picture of the stadium from 30 years ago and I noticed the scoreboard looked like the exact same as the one today and remarked in it. A little updating wouldn’t hurt!
