Former Highland Park girls basketball standout Kaitlyn Read is earning rave reviews on Broadway.

Well, not on stage, mind you, but as a freshman on the court at nearby New York University, where she recently was named the University Athletic Association Athlete of the Week.

Read scored a career-high 26 points as the Violets (awesome nickname alert) upset previously unbeaten Emory University 77-71 on Jan. 24. She also had nine rebounds and five assists in that game, and hit all three of her three-point attempts.

Two days later, Read tallied a game-high 15 points along with nine rebounds, seven assists and four steals in NYU’s 69-60 victory over the University of Rochester.

Read has started all 16 games for NYU this season, leading the Violets to a 15-1 record and an NCAA Division III national ranking. She is second on the team with an average of 12.1 points per game, and leads NYU in steals and three-point shooting.

Plus, we hear that NYU is a very fine academic institution, or at least that’s what our rejection letter told us many years ago.

Read, of course, had 1,615 points in her varsity career for the Lady Scots before graduating last year.
