Scots Look to Stop Legacy Ground Game

It’s a safe bet that Highland Park’s preparations for its next playoff opponent will include a steady dose of run defense.

The Scots (11-1) will face Mansfield Legacy (10-2) in a Class 4A Division I Region II semifinal at 12:30 p.m. Friday at AT&T Stadium in Arlington.

That means HP must defend against a Legacy rushing attack that tallied more than 600 yards on Friday during a 70-49 win over McKinney North in an area round game at Kincaide Stadium.

Kenton Mayberry did the majority of the heavy lifting, with 37 carries for 340 yards and six touchdowns in the rainy and cold conditions. But Mayberry isn’t even the top rusher for the Broncos this season, despite having 1,063 yards and 14 touchdowns. Nor is he second.

He is third on the roster behind Kijana Amous and Terrance Ivery, who have combined for more than 3,000 yards and 34 touchdowns on the ground. Amous missed Friday’s game with an injury, and Ivery left the game after getting shaken up in the first half. But they could return against the Scots.

All of it adds up to a task that might be easily defined, but won’t be easy to execute as HP looks to continue its playoff march.
