Football Divisions Get Patriotic Names
Today’s edition of Park Cities People includes a “Little Big Leagues” story on two teams in the Park Cities YMCA’s fifth-grade football league. That story says the league’s three divisions are named the SEC, the Big XII, and the Big Ten. The story also says the Big Ten’s name was changed this week from Missouri Valley, because the latter name would obviously imply a lower level of skill.
Since that story went to press, the division’s three names have been changed to Red, White, and Blue, respectively. We’ll keep you apprised if they change again.
A big donor from the Missouri Valley Conference got upset, so they had to change it.
YMCA football was much better when it was the elementary schools versus one another. Not this mixed players from different schools with random team names. Most of my friends remembering intense rivalries with Hyer vs Armstrong, Bradfield vs UP. White, Gold, Blue and Maroon matchups meant more. When we discussed with younger siblings after it changed from schools to teams, most of them dont remember the rivalries or games.
Also sad that they had to change the Missouri Valley Conference name because 1 donor got upset. That division has been around since the 80s for YMCA and possibly earlier.
