Are You Being Buzzed by Love Field Flights?

A Highland Park resident got in touch with us over the weekend to complain about the noise from Love Field. “We have been pounded with air traffic since the new gates opened on April 16,” he wrote. And he added that any curfew on flights is “a fiction.” “Flights are running through the neighborhoods at all hours.” Has anyone else noticed an increase in noise?

Yes, I’ve noticed an increase in flights and noise from Love Field over the last week or so. They appear to be using a different runway. I didn’t realize there’d been new gates opened.

Yes. Seemed to start around the time of the Bush Library opening. Sometimes looked like planes were landing closer, just west of Lakeside. The east-west traffic from Love has definitely moved north to the HP border. Is it connected to the increase in flights as the Wright Amendment completely disappears?

Thanks to everyone out there who voted against Wright. Forget appealing to the airport or politicians for help because some little FAA troll sets the flight patterns and he has more power than God.

I don’t get it? If John Wayne Airport in Orange County can get a Noise Reduction Abatement then why can’t we? I’ve heard that it was because of the “celebrities” and their money that won the board over. Well don’t we have celebrities and money in our town? I get so sick of hearing the planes take off and land as it ruins my TV watching, Meditation time, Company visits etc. What is so different about the surroundings of Newport than the surroundings of Highland Park? Could someone research how they were able to pull off the Noise Reduction Abatement and follow their lead?

I agree that the flights have been a nuisance and definately fly after the 9pm cutoff.

Can someone post an organized way for us to complain? Who should we complain too?

I am sure that having planes fly over is a bother, but I would also bet a million dollars that Love Field was in business when you purchased your home close to an airport. Did you not think that at some point there would be more planes flying?? Just like people that complain about SMU… think before you buy. Buyer Beware!

Who Came First makes a good point. We choose to live here because of many conveniences including be close to Love Field to catch flights. When buying a home there are many location factors, this is just a mixed one. Preston Hollow has no issues with flight noise yet still has the convenience. Unless you bought your home in the 1940’s before Love Field opened then you really don’t have anyone to blame for the noise.

who came first- Did you miss the part about all the new gates? It’s not the same airport it once was.

Similar to people who move “in-town” to be close to the action, and then complain about the bars and traffic, etc.

I think we’ve been lulled into the misconception that there would never be a lot of planes coming and going from Love Field, and now reality has kicked in.

Did anyone move here to be close to Love Field to catch flights? I don’t know of any. I fly almost every week, all across the US,for years, and I can count on 1 hand the flights I’ve had out of Love.

And reality hasn’t kicked in, change has. It is a sleepy little airport no more. People buy in the Park Cities for the schools, neighborhood feel, and proximity. They won’t stop because Love increases it’s flights. But that doesn’t mean that they don’t have the right to fight to see if they can change things.

This is a no-brainer – who came first is spot on. And to say it is due to additional gates, etc…hogwash. You buy a home near an airport and complain about noise? That is pathetic and deranged. Love Field is nothing but a positive to this city. The economic impact of such a great airport cannot really be quantified, and if a few whining, world-revolves-around-me buffoons do anything to jeopardize the evolution and development of it, well, that would be really sad.

HP75… no, I did not miss the part about all the new gates, but if someone bought a home in the last 10 years close to Love Field then they have must be very naive to think that there would be no growth, i.e. more planes. Like I said… you can not complain when it was already there with growth potential.

Of course Love Field is great and convenient, but anyone who has lived here for any length of time knows the air traffic over Hp has increased big time, especially over the last five years, for many reasons–it aint the last week or so. They are taking off at least and hour earlier each morning and have many more planes coming off of the Lemmon side runway(I forget the rw#)for several reasons. They are supposed to stay down Lemmon until they hit Central and then turn, which Southwest does but many of the PJs dont, hanging an immediate left over HP as soon as they get up. It’s ridiculous. The King Airs are buzzing the HP tree tops like crop dusters!

Who cares who came first. What a joke. Might as well give the whole place back to the indians then because, well heck, they were here first! Thinking people challenge the status quo. Buffoons fall in Luv with airports.

Planes have been flying low over southwestern Highland Park for decades. Maybe there are a few more planes, but this is not new. The Southwest flights land either on 31R or 31L and always have. When the wind is blowing from the south, the planes take off into the wind, which in the case of runway 31R takes them right across the southern end of Highland Park. Likewise, when the wind is blowing from the north, the planes will land from the south, again taking them over HP. It happens. That noise you hear? It’s the sound of progress.

And for those suddenly aware of new gates at Love Field, you’re too late. The repeal of the Wright Amendment was debated and settled a decade ago. Sorry, folks.

Neal- Are you some kind of Robber Baron or something? The sound of progress. Really? The main issue here is the right of municipalities to have some control over the airspace above their heads. Since we’re discussing the economic impact of Love Field, let’s also talk about the economic impact Highland Park has on the rest of this state. %70 of the town’s property taxes go to poor school districts. $67 million dollars in 2011, over 1 billion dollars in total so far. Do you really want to mess with all that in the name of progress?

Agreeing with HP75, it does not make a flying(no pun intended)flip who or what got here first. The fact is there are alot more planes and plane noise than there ever have been. Even if they don’t fly over HP you still hear every plane flying down Lemmon, and many that are not even from or to Love Field, but just passing through. Thanks for the RW designations Neal, you Robber Baron you. Unfortunately,as Rico alludes to above, unless the Chairman of the FAA moves to our fair city nothing is going to change. The city can’t do diddly except bitch about it like the rest of us.

Oh,and speaking of HP noise, about those leaf blowers…..

HP75 have you ever heard of “moving to the nuisance and then complaining?” Most of the people in HP didn’t move to HP in 1913. You live next to an airport. There is noise. I will tell you, the noise is far less now after the 737 engine changed. Additionally, how much does it really bother you? NOT MUCH is probably the answer. How much do you really hear? The answer to this is probably, “Only when I am outside.” Well, you probably don’t spend a lot of time as the heat and humidity probably keep you inside. The closest you get to going outside is when you open the door to accept the mail or to allow the maid access. The airport was installed so HP residents had quick access to the airport. Additionally, how many residents are really affected? The news report stated most of the residents didn’t want to speak on camera for fear their over inflated home prices would fall. REALLY. You live next to an airport. I went to boot camp right next to the San Diego airport. Within the 3 months I was there, I got use to the planes. This is a bunch of people who feel they are entitled because the live in HP.

I’m going to make a serious accusation here. Are people really supporting more noise? Are people calling others “Entitled” because of where they live and the fact something has changed and there is now more noise? Are these people sent here by Love Field or the FAA to disparage people that speak against the increased noise and want to find out what is happening and fight for something different.

I have lived in the south end of Highland Park and DEFINITELY got awakened to the noise of the Southwest planes taking off every morning. The first flight is about 6:00 and more often than not, it woke me up.

People have a right to question what is happening in their neighborhood and fight for change….no matter when they arrived.

This problem doesn’t affect me now, i live further north.

    Amen El Cangrejo.

I too am not affected by the flights, but people certainly have a right to question this. “You bought near an airport so you have no rights” is just wrong. So is “who came first”.

Would be interesting to do an IP trace on the comments “in favor of noise” from Who Came First and Christopher. Agree with El Cangrejo that it is likely these were planted by a marketer for Love Field. Can’t think of any well intentioned person that would be glad that air traffic noise pollution has increased in a residential area.

Noise reduction abatement here we come!

Has anyone thought seriously about how we got to this point? In reality, these discussions would have never happened if the City and SWA had lived up to the agreement with Fort Worth. I find it hard to believe the noise under discussion here would compare with the levels before DFW opened. The aircraft being used today is quieter than ever, and while I agree that the traffic patterns and the subsequent increase in noise has increased, is really something that you can’t just ignore or tune out. When I first moved here from FW, it seemed the noise was am issue during some early morning hours, but I rarely ever noticed after that point. What I find truly amazing is that the changes at Love were brought about by a firestorm of supporters who wanted the restrictions lifted. If you think there is an issue now, just wait until AA returns and other carriers increase their service exponentially. The real culprits are the executives at SWA who refused to join the rest of the aviation world at DFW and as a result have enjoyed most favored status in Dallas ever since. So it appears to me that the FAA and others really have no choice except to attempt to handle what will likely be a huge increase in the next couple of years.

In the meantime, those who can’t seem to grasp how this happened need to reflect back and remember how it could have been avoided. And remember we all share in the success or failure, so lets try to work together for an amicable resolution.
