Scots Advance to Class 4A State Tennis Finals
Although the final score looked close, it really wasn’t. Highland Park’s tennis team actually dominated Montgomery in Friday’s Class 4A state semifinals in College Station.
The Scots (22-0) emerged with a 10-9 victory over the Bears to advance to Saturday morning’s finals against San Antonio Alamo Heights, a 10-3 winner over Wichita Falls Rider in the other state semi. However, Montgomery won all nine of its matches — six boys singles and three girls singles — by default.
Scots head coach Dan Holden said Montgomery coach Amy Cabato wanted to play out the entire match after Highland Park took a 10-0 lead. Rather than risk injury to any of his players for the final, Holden elected to default on nine of the matches.
The Scots are shooting for their fifth straight state title and 14th overall. Alamo Heights (17-2) has won 12 state championships.
What is the default rule? If a team gets up by 10 do they just forfeit the remaining matches to rest?
