SMU Linebacker Caught in Escort Scandal

There’s being a college athlete, and then there’s being stupid. Often times — speaking as a former college athlete — those times overlap. Okay, in all honesty, the Venn diagram of “college athletes” and “stupidity” is pretty much like a total lunar eclipse.

This one kind-of takes the cake.

An SMU linebacker is caught in the middle of a prostitution-burglary case, after the player allegedly didn’t pay an escort for sex.

CBS 11 has the story:

The illegal solicitation and theft happened on a night that was supposed to be full of fun and celebration. It was the evening of SMU’s end of year banquet, an event held annually for the football team.

Three Mustang players attended the dinner and returned to their off-campus home, on Anita Street, to find that someone had stolen more than $3,000 worth of laptops, televisions and video games.

One of the players, identified as Uchenna Nwabuike, told police he believed the person responsible for the thefts was an escort. The linebacker from Missouri City went on to tell authorities that he had, “made a deal with the suspect to have sex with her for $50.”

In the police report, Nwabuike admitted that, “he did not pay the suspect for the acts that she performed” and left the woman in the home alone while the players attended the banquet.

Police are still searching for the woman, who made off with, basically, a pretty small Best Buy.

Too many hits to the head? The best part is the sticker shock when the hooker said $50 bucks!

Why didn’t he follow the school’s marketing slogan from a few years ago and “pony up”?

    So many questions.

    1. Why does an SMU ball player have to pay for sex (or at least promise to)?
    2. Why is he calling police? Doesn’t SMU have internal security to handle these matters quietly?
    3. Should’t an SMU law professor brief incoming players how to talk to the police? i.e. Not confess to crimes when making police reports, etc.
