Hockaday Receives $2.5 Million Challenge Grant

The Hockaday School recently announced that an anonymous donor has committed a $2.5 million challenge grant in support of the renovation of the school’s boarding facility. This is the largest pledge to the residence department in Hockaday’s history and comes during the early stages of the Centennial Campaign.

Hockaday’s residence department houses a diverse group of young women from around the world and across the United States. Currently, the 79 residence students come from 12 countries and 10 states. The total cost of the project is estimated at $5 million, and the school plans to begin the renovation in 2013. The renovation will include top-to-bottom improvements of the 50-year-old-residence halls, installation of ADA compliant access, including an elevator; much-needed modernizing of the bathrooms; and the construction of a three-level bridge building to connect the residence halls with the administration building.

This renovation supports the implementation of a faculty-in-residence program by creating four apartments to house teachers and their families.

“We know that the interactions and relationships between teachers and students enhance the learning environment,” said head of school Kim Wargo. “As part of the only day/boarding school in Dallas, Hockaday’s faculty-in-residence program will enrich the lives of all students.”

The donor family sees this challenge grant as an opportunity for all whose lives have been enriched by Hockaday’s residence program to come together in support of this transformational program – one that is central to Hockaday’s mission.
