In Case You Were Thinking About Having a Garage Sale …

A University Park resident’s daughter recently emailed me to ask if she needed a permit to have an estate sale at her mom’s house. As I do with many questions, I turned to city spokesman Steve Mace, who said no; estate sales follow the same rules as garage sales. Mace then provided a copy of those rules:

A resident owner may have a garage or yard sale on no more than two (2) days in any one calendar year. Sales may be conducted only in the back yard, garage, patio, or driveway of a residence, provided that no portion of the sale is on any public right-of-way or in the front yard. A resident owner may post a sign on his or her premises during the hours in which the sale will be conducted. The sign may advertise the sale and cannot exceed two (2) square feet in size. No signs are permitted on any street, sidewalk, alley, park, open space, public right-of-way, utility easement, or any other public property within the city.

If you’re going to host a sale, you should probably advertise it.

What is the fine for all of those “Garage Sale” signs on the corners of residential streets and at busy intersections? Is that actually enforced?
