One Million Moms Boycotts GCB

Anna had this yesterday at Unfair Park, but I wanted to toss it up here as well. Seems the One Million Moms group has called for a boycott of GCB, saying it is “deliberately attempting to sabotage our faith.” A statement on their website goes on to say:

It is based on the book “Good Christian B*tches” and mocks Christianity repeatedly. This anti-Christian program blasphemes God, Jesus Christ, God’s Church, and the Bible. As Christians, we will not stand for this Christian-bashing program. No other religion has to contend with this ridicule so why should we?

I disagree with just about everything this statement says, but the bur in my side is the “No other religion has to contend with this ridicule so why should we?” part. Really? The President of the United States hasn’t been subjected to repeated claims that a.) he’s Muslim, and b.) that that’s a problem? Really? Have we completely white-washed the history books so much that we forgot how much people openly hated Jews for much of the 20th century? Really?

I understand and support a group’s right to protest something. I do. But when their logic is flawed at such a base level (and this is coming from someone who thinks this vapid representation of the area I cover is beneath the dregs of most Vh1 reality shows), that’s when I stop listening to their arguments.

Yes, really. I think that your view of their view is as flawed as you think their statment is. They are referring to specifically a tv show directed at ridiculing their beliefs. Nowhere in the statement, either implied or stated, does it come close to saying that Chrisitanity is the only religion to ever be ridiculed. I do not believe there is or will ever be a “Good Muslim Bitches” tv show, because it would never be allowed past the first pitch. When that show comes on primetime national television, then your view will make more sense.

Way to go, Brad! Got your bubble wrap suit on?

I heard that Rush accused Obama of attacking Christians by taking action against the head of the Lord’s Resistance Army, a despicable and most un-Christian group. Kony and the LRA do Christians a disservice by calling themselves such (and fooling Rush).

On a much smaller scale, real life GCB’s do Christianity–and the One Million Moms–a disservice. This spoof may point that out. Or it may get pulled by ABC. Whatever.

I don’t think that their beliefs are being ridiculed in the show. Rather, I think the ridicule is being hurled at people who claim to be Christians and then participate in un-Christian behaviors. And I do think these OMM need to get a life. I’m with you Bradford, but I think that your viewpoint will be very unpopular here.

@sweet, Regardless of whether you personally feel that the show is ridiculing Christianity, my argument still stands. Until there is a show either ridiculing another major world religion or where the ridicule is being hurled at people who claim to be *insert religion here* and then participate in *insert religion here*; they have a perfectly logical argument. Again, there is zero chance that there will ever be a “Good Muslim Bitches” show in general let alone in a national primetime spot.

I don’t know what the problem is. The bible is full of GCB’s.

I have trouble feeling sorry for us poor, pitiful, picked-upon Christians. It’s not as if we basically run the country or anything, right? I mean, there are SOOOO many Muslims and Hindus and Athiests in elected positions, and I hardly EVER see a church anywhere, or see sports teams praying, and on and on and on.

Christians need to hush up and start living their lives like Christians. We aren’t a minority (far from it), we aren’t endangered, and there’s no “attack” on us.

What so many “Christians” seem to think is an attack, is usually other people speaking up when we attack them. Does that fact that Bob and Steve down the street would like to get married affect your marriage in any possible way? No, it doesn’t. Then why do Christians need to get all in a tizzy and spend millions of dollars (Catholic Church and other religious groups) and countless hours attacking innocent people who just want to live their lives?

@Sammy, So your entire argument is that attacking Christianity is ok because there are more Christians and Churches in America than Muslims and Mosques? I’ll have to say that I don’t care how many of any one group there are, I don’t think anyone should be attacking another’s religion. Period.

Let me see if I get this straight: It’s wrong for Rush Limbaugh to call a woman a slut, but it’s okay for ABC to refer to women as bitches. It’s okay to laud other religions (“Good American Muslims”)but in the Christian faith, we must stereotype them, accuse them, and generally demean believers. I will see which sponsors hold up this program and I will boycott their products.

I fully support the boycotting of gcb. The standard of morality and respect for anything holy seems to have fallen altogether in Hollywood. God is looking down upon the earth, looking to see if there are any who are still taking a stand for Him.

    @ Debra,

Let’s not combine the two. It IS wrong for Rush Limbaugh to call THIS woman a slut, just because she has an opinion that differs from his. His was a aggressive, demeaning attack on a women, who he then tried to bully into submission. It was the tone and language of his attack that was egregious. And of course, the hypocrisy of someone who has been married FOUR times and an admitted drug abuser judging anyone is comical.

And, while I agree that there is certainly a double standard in regards to being able to call Christian women bitches vs. other religions, the tone of this is one of humor. It is also important to the debate that this book was written by a christian woman. If it were written by a muslim man, or a jewish woman, then the debate would be different.

Geez, can we cut the “Rush is assaulting women” thing! Did Limbaugh’s language go too far? Absolutely YES, but to assert that he is attacking all women is ridiculous beyond reason. Limbaugh and GCB are both programs for entertainment purposes, so if they offend you, don’t tune in. If GCB offends you as an attack on Christianity or religion, you should be even more enraged by recent legislation forcing religious institutions to provide services that go against their doctrine. GCB and Rush are small potatoes in comparison.

As a Christian, I think GCB is great. People opposed to or offended by GCB are just having a hard time looking in the mirror (stereotypes would not exist if they did not have some shred of truth to them).
Instead of “Christians” getting upset about these stereotypes portrayed on television, they could better spend their time doing something about these stereotypes in real life if they are so truly concerned about the image of Christianity. It s much more damaging to our faith for these realnlife stereotypes to walk around making true believers look bad than for a silly show to point it out.
