Howdy Dance

Walter Kelly, the new Highland Park High School principal, sends word to students who will be attending tonight’s Howdy Dance.

The type of dancing acceptable for this event is to be kept in styles that are fun and non-offensive. Inappropriate and sexually suggestive movements will not be permitted. If a student does not respond to the faculty chaperone’s request to change his/her dancing style, he/she will be escorted off the floor.

The link was my addition but you know that’s what he was thinkin’.

    “I wanna dance with somebody…”

    Seriously, Merritt. Awesome.

You know, I used to get all up in arms about this stuff. “The schools are taking over our kid’s lives” and stuff like that. I really did. Even before I had a kid. And how can a kid possibly know that a dance move is “inappropriate”?

But things have changed, for me. At least a little. For one, I now have a kid.

I’m starting my 4th year in an HPISD elementary school so I know a tiny bit about what’s going on.

Last week at “meet the teacher” our 3d grade teacher had to specifically ask parents not to fill out their children’s reading logs or stuff their kids’ homework into backpacks so the children are sure to turn in it on time, special tutors after school, and blah, blah and blah.

Whatever happened to “responsibility” and being a normal person who, if you screw up, accepts and suffers the consequences?

So now we’ve got some poor high school administrator who recognizes he’s got a problem but has few tools with which to deal with it. But he did his best and issued an amazingly vague set of rules.

But because his policy is so vague, everyone can have a lawsuit if they’re accused of violating school policy.

If we had parents with common sense (hey girls: no skanky halter tops: they’re tacky and make you look cheap) it wouldn’t be an issue. But we don’t. Instead, we’ve got this “girls gone wild” culture that the parents not only allow, but won’t address.

And this forces the school to address this nonsense.

    It’s all so unseemly.

Alrighty then. I await your pitch forks. Bash away. I just took a deep breath, so I think I can weather the storm.

Snarko here. I didn’t hit the “send” button on that last post; I was still revising when it was inadvertently posted. Hiccups and run-ons are not my normal style.

Anyway, back to my comment: I would only say that parents in this school district will be forever plagued until they back off, let the schools do their work, and let their children suffer real consequences.

Please, I think everybody would be wildly IMPRESSED if anybody at the dance even attempted to dance like “dirty dancing”. That type of dancing requires skill and practice… and why do that when you can just “bump and grind”. However, I will say I was very impressed with a senior boy who danced at the pep rally Friday morning, I hear he is a transfer from Booker T. where he trained in dance. Why am I not surprised. Maybe the students will take some cues from the musical this year and learn some “group dances”… ANYTHING that requires more than a guy standing there while a girl… well you’ve seen it before, you get the idea!

    i realize I’m late but…i miss you. I miss..us.

There is no MP in Austin. Though that’s probably a good thing. She would probably have ravens tattooed on her side-boob and smell like dirty trees.
